Dangers Posed by Cement Trucks

Concrete mixers weigh 20,000 to 30,000 pounds empty, and can carry an additional 40,000 pounds of concrete, gravel, and sand. Additionally, drivers of these vehicles are often under strict timelines as they don’t want the concrete to completely harden during transport. The combined weight and speed can cause catastrophic accidents, resulting in severe injuries and fatalities for those unfortunate enough to be in their way.

These vehicles are also prone to rollover accidents. As with all types of truck driving, it is often difficult to maintain qualified drivers, which can lead to inexperienced drivers behind the wheel who do not know how to properly handle these large vehicles. Due to the high center of gravity and construction of these vehicles, they can roll over at speeds as low as five mph when making a 90-degree turn.

Other factors can contribute to accidents, including defective parts, equipment failure, and improper maintenance. Accidents involving cement trucks can involve many of the same factors that contribute to other truck accidents, including distractions, negligent driving, or fatigued driving. However, cement trucks pose additional hazards due to their unique cargo, which can spill out onto the roadway and cause secondary accidents.

Rules Governing the Operation of Cement Trucks

Cement truck drivers are subjected to many of the same regulations as other commercial drivers under the  Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act (FMCSA), but there are some exceptions due to the unique nature of these vehicles. In particular, cement truck drivers can drive a maximum of eleven hours after ten consecutive hours off duty. They cannot work for more than fourteen hours per day. They are required to take a 30-minute rest break, but they can do so while waiting with the vehicle at a job site. Notably, concrete mixers are exempt from the requirement to install electronic logging devices in their vehicles, unlike other truck drivers. This can make it more likely for their driver logs to be tampered with in the event of an accident or non-compliance with hours-of-service regulations.
