Recovery Strategies For a Concussion

Posted By Aguirre Law | August 22 2023 | Personal Injury

Concussion sufferers who are screened for brain injuries and receive follow-up care can avoid serious long-term health consequences. Follow-up care plans for concussion victims include basic recovery strategies that allow the brain to heal before resuming its daily activities.

The following article outlines recovery strategies for a concussion but is by no means a substitute for medical care or advice from a licensed physician. If you were the victim of an accident and need help finding medical treatment or paying for concussion care, reach out to a San Antonio brain injury attorney for a case consultation.

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by trauma to the head. A victim does not have to hit their head to suffer a concussion. Jarring of the body, head, and neck can cause a brain injury.

Concussions do not necessarily cause a loss of consciousness. Most people with a concussion make a complete recovery.

Signs and Symptoms of a Concussion can Vary

Signs and symptoms of a concussion may not appear for hours or days following an accident. They may change over time making any symptoms difficult to recognize and manage.

Anyone who suffers a head injury should be evaluated for a concussion immediately and be monitored for any of the following:

  • Nausea or vomiting;
  • Uneven pupil size;
  • Changes in behavior;
  • Dizziness;
  • Headache;
  • Slurred speech;
  • Sensitivity to light and noise;
  • Difficulty waking; and
  • Blurry vision.

Changes in a victim’s condition must be addressed to avoid worsening of their brain injury.

Recovery Strategies for a Concussion

To optimize the recovery process and permit the brain to heal, a concussion victim should rest and drink plenty of fluids after an accident. A consistent bedtime routine is needed along with rest periods throughout the day.

In addition, a concussion victim should also:

  • Slowly return to daily activities. Pull back if symptoms return and try again in a couple of days;
  • Avoid excessive physical exercise and strain on the body;
  • Participate in gentle activities throughout the day;
  • Identify and avoid triggers such as bright lights and loud noises;
  • Avoid returning to sports and other activities before being cleared by a doctor;
  • Limit mentally challenging activities as these can worsen symptoms;
  • Use caution when taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or naproxen as these can mask symptoms;
  • Use relaxation techniques to improve stress levels; and
  • Discuss any feelings of frustration or sadness with friends or loved ones as these are natural during recovery.

Never wait to get medical attention following an accident. Putting off injury care can cause long-term complications and make a full recovery impossible.
